City Council to Adopt Ordinance

On September 10, 2024, the Bainbridge Island City Council voted to forward Ordinance No. 2024-21 prohibiting crematoria in all zoning districts to the September 24, 2024, business meeting for consideration and adoption. 

Free Forum on Environmentally Friendly Natural After-Death Care

On September 21, 2024, from 1-5 pm at the Island Center Hall, EarthRest experts will host a free event about alternatives to traditional burial and cremation. Discussion topics include human composting, water cremation, and green burial. A Q&A as well as materials from various organizations will be available. FREE tickets are available here.

Planning Commission Recommends No Crematoria on Bainbridge

On August 22, 2024, the Bainbridge Island Planning Commission voted to ban crematoria or any type (including for pets) on Bainbridge Island. The City Council meeting will take place at the Council Chambers at 6 pm and is open to the public.

On May 28, 2024, the Bainbridge Island City Council held a public hearing on the topic of establishing a moratorium on crematoria. The vote to maintain the moratorium for the remainder of the 6 month period passed 5 to 2.

The Bainbridge City Council has scheduled a Public Hearing on the topic of crematoriums and related code for May 28, 2024 at 6 pm in the Council Chambers at 280 Madison Avenue, Bainbridge Island.

This is an opportunity for the public to tell the city and the council what regulations need to be implemented regarding crematoria on Bainbridge Island. If you are unable to attend, comments can be submitted to the council via e-mail council@bainbridgewa.gov or to the city clerk at cityclerk@bainbridgewa.gov.
